Welcome to my latest audio project, “Cultivation”. The project started out as a challenge to practice my writing, composition, sound design, production and mixing skills while attempting to make my first solo album. After graduating from Abbey Road Institute in London I felt the need to express myself through music and try to write something completely different. I wanted to boil the whole thing down to some principle which I could refer to and feel connected to. What got me inspired aside from coming back home to Estonia after 10 years of living in London was the ancient cultivation practice Falun Gong, made public in 1992. I was inspired by their principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance.

The album "Cultivation" is divided into two parts, which characterize two opposite moods. Thus, I wanted to designate two interdependent states that a person goes through in his life - unconscious and conscious.

The first half of the album characterizes search for oneself, endless overcoming of obstacles, monotony of days and even despair (“Cultivation” is about self-realisation). It begins with the song “Her”, an energetic and soulful prelude about how important it is to thank others and never despair, even if everything looks bad at first glance. With the song “Silence is Rare”, the music gradually begins to “wake up” from a long sleep of unconsciousness, gradually leaving its muddy past behind, as if a tiny ray that guides you from eclipse to light. The second part of the album sounds joyful and solemn. There is spiritual harmony here and celebration of life.

I hope that in this experience everyone can find a reflection of themselves, because all people in their hearts admire the grandiose picture of the universe, nature and the eternal beauty of life.

The album was produced in 2020-2021 with the help of my songwriting friends. I used a basic set of equipment available in my studio and recorded and mixed it entirely in the box. Although I’m not a singer, I decided to record myself as an experiment and also to match the energy, emotion and articulation inherent in these songs.

Press Kit

Who are the band members and what do they play?

JANKOVSKY is the only band member in this project. He plays analogue synth and drum pads. He also sings.

What are the band's main influences?

M83, Sigur Ros, Tycho, Biome, Tourist, Max Cooper.

Have you played any notable gigs, festivals or other events? Likewise radio or TV appearances?

JANKOVSKY worked with artists from 'Let it Shine', 'X Factor UK', 'Red Bull Academy', 'VICE'. In addition to his production work, he has toured the world and performed on stages in USA, China, Russia, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, headlining venues such as Le Trianon (FRA), Berghain (GER), KOKO (UK), La Machine (FRA), Splore (NZ).

Are there any other interesting or amusing happenings – no matter how small – that the band have been involved with that would be of interest to those who like your music?

JANKOVSKY is inspired by the sounds of the 80s, in particular sci-fi movie genre. Among those are his favourite films Bladerunner, Stranger Things, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Oblivion. He like big spacious soundscapes combined with modern electronic pop music production. There's also an element of light in his music, longing for peace and harmony.

Tell us about your album.

It was recorded in JANKOVSKY's studio in Tallinn, Estonia with a help of his friends musicians and songwriters. It's a very DIY project with no big buck involved. Purely a hobby. It was recorded during the lockdown period of 2020. Perhaps it was a good time to self-explore and expand creatively.

Were there any notable or amusing happenings surrounding the recording/production of the EP? As above, list whatever might be of relevance.

There was a lot of meditation and looking within during the process of recording this song. Unsuccessful personal life, lockdown, loss of a job, leaving London after 10 years among other personal psychological realisations have in combination accumulated to the point of spontaneous burst of creativity. It was a genuine upgrade of one's life. Instead of going down the opposite dark end of depression and self-destruction, JANKOVSKY chose life and peace within. As a result his album Cultivation was born. Her was the first song on his album.

Follow Truthfullness-Compassion-Forbearance. The change is waiting.
